Dr. Shattock is the Professor in Molecular Infection at the Centre for Infection, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, St. George’s, University of London. He directs a research group working on the pathogenesis and transmission of HIV infection, with a particular emphasis on the development of prevention strategies applicable to the developing world. His research group has been instrumental in elucidating the early mechanism of HIV transmission. This work is being used in translational fashion to develop safe and effective vaginal vaccines and microbicides designed to prevent HIV infection of women, and is supported by a number of funding agencies including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, US National Institutes of Health, European Commission and IPM. Dr. Shattock is a member of the UK Medical Research Council’s Virucides Steering Committee, co-coordinates the scientific direction of the European Microbicides Program (EMPRO) and the EUROPRISE network of excellence on vaccines and microbicides, and directs the CHAVI Mucosal Immunity Discovery group.
