IPM has obtained several non-exclusive, royalty-free licenses from pharmaceutical companies through agreements that have become a leading model for public-private partnership in fostering global health solutions.
IPM currently has agreements with Merck and Co., Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer Inc. and Tibotec Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. IPM also has a joint license with CONRAD from Gilead Sciences, Inc.. Discussions are ongoing with other pharmaceutical companies.
IPM’s agreements provide flexibility in selecting future manufacturers and determining pricing, which will allow it to develop, manufacture and distribute antiretroviral compounds as microbicides for use in developing countries. IPM also receives technical support from its industry partners for other activities, such as drug synthesis, site evaluation, and work on new compounds.
IPM did not provide any financial compensation to the companies for these licensing agreements. This contract structure and IPM’s experience has been made available to other product developers seeking to negotiate similar agreements with the private sector.
