Microbicide Access Forum

In a rapidly changing and complex HIV/ AIDS landscape, opportunities to exchange clear and up-to-date information and engage in a dialogue with country and international stakeholders are essential.

IPM convenes the Microbicide Access Forum on an annual basis in order to provide a platform for stakeholders to share information and discuss timely issues and new research that can inform the future introduction and use of microbicides. The first such Forum was held in 2007.

Microbicide Access Forum 2007: Nairobi

With funding from the US Agency for International Development, IPM and the World Health Organization hosted the first annual Microbicide Access Forum on 2-3 July 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya. More than 45 government representatives, program implementers, advocates, social researchers and clinicians from the HIV/AIDS and reproductive health fields gathered to discuss approaches to microbicide introduction and scale-up.

The Forum focused on the design of future pilot introduction programs and the key needs and decision points for policy-makers in countries that may be the first to introduce microbicides. Experiences of past and current technology introductions were drawn on and the larger context of HIV/AIDS programs were also discussed.
